Overview
The Khasi oral tradition holds that a golden ladder once stood at a specific hill in the East Khasi Hills connecting the living world to the Creator. The hill is Lum Sohpetbneng – Sohpetbneng meaning Navel of Heaven in Khasi, the point where the cord between earth and the divine was once attached. Sixteen Khasi families are said to have descended to the earth from this hill when the connection still existed. The ladder is gone from the tradition’s account but the hill remains, and the lum sohpetbneng sacred hill package is built around arriving at a place that carries that specific weight.
Bon handles the vehicle from Guwahati Airport or Railway Station with Shillong as the four-night base throughout. Day 2 goes to the sacred hill in the morning and the Don Bosco Museum in the afternoon for the cultural frame the hill requires. Day 3 moves to Smit village for the Khasi heartland. Day 4 closes the circuit at Mawphlang Sacred Forest and Laitlum Canyon. Day 5 returns to Guwahati Airport or Railway Station. Daily breakfast on CP basis throughout.

The lum sohpetbneng sacred hill tour picks up at Guwahati Airport or Railway Station with the 100-kilometre drive west through the Brahmaputra plains and into the East Khasi Hills. The road climbs through Nongpoh and arrives in Shillong at 1,496 metres in approximately 2.5 to 3 hours.
The city tonight is preparation - the hill tomorrow carries a different kind of attention from a viewpoint or a trek and the group that arrives rested brings that attention more completely than one that arrives tired. The Police Bazaar lanes and the Ward's Lake evening are available but not necessary. Sleep is.
An early departure from Shillong reaches the lum sohpetbneng sacred hill before the morning has settled into the day. The hill rises from the East Khasi Hills as a place the Khasi tradition has held in the highest register of their cosmological geography for generations - the Navel of Heaven, the point where Ka Jingkieng Ksiar, the golden ladder to the Creator, once stood.
No tour infrastructure crowds the approach. The walk to the summit is the act of going somewhere that the Khasi people have understood as the centre of their world. The afternoon returns to Shillong for the Don Bosco Museum - seven floors of northeast tribal history that give the morning's experience its wider human frame.
The lum sohpetbneng sacred hill circuit continues into the Khasi heartland on Day 3. Smit village sits 11 kilometres from Shillong as the seat of the Syiem of Khyrim - the traditional chief of the Khyrim state. This is where the Nongkrem Dance happens in October and November each year.
Outside festival season the village carries the quieter daily life of a Khasi administrative and ceremonial centre. Walking Smit's paths after the sacred hill of the previous morning gives the Khasi world a second register - the political and ceremonial alongside the cosmological. The afternoon returns to Shillong at its own pace.
The lum sohpetbneng sacred hill circuit closes its sacred sites on Day 4. Mawphlang Sacred Forest is a law kyntang - a grove held under Khasi community protection where no plant, soil or stone may be removed.
The guided walk runs 1.5 to 2 hours through canopy layers that community protection has kept intact for generations. Guide charges are paid locally at the grove entrance. Laitlum Canyon sits 25 kilometres from Shillong and the afternoon goes there - the valley that opens from flat grassland without warning, falling below a rim that gives no forewarning of the depth beneath it.
Morning checkout after breakfast and the drive from Shillong to Guwahati Airport or Railway Station covers 100 kilometres down through Nongpoh and across the Brahmaputra plains, approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. The lum sohpetbneng sacred hill tour closes here.
Afternoon and evening departures are comfortably in reach. Groups with morning flights or trains should flag timing with the Bon team at booking so the Shillong checkout can be structured with enough buffer.
