Overview

Wular Lake sits in the Bandipora district of North Kashmir at approximately 1,580 metres — a body of water that covers between 24 and approximately 100 square kilometres depending on the season, fed by the Jhelum River entering from the south and draining back into the Jhelum on the northern side. It is measured as the largest freshwater lake in Asia by surface area and the standard Kashmir tourist circuit, which focuses entirely on the 18-square-kilometre Dal Lake in Srinagar, does not visit it. The lake is a working water — the fishing communities along the shoreline have run their boats on it for generations, the Jhelum’s seasonal flood pulse expands the lake dramatically in spring snowmelt and the winter months bring migratory birds in numbers that the Dal Lake circuit cannot match. This wular lake kashmir tour package builds a North Kashmir circuit around the lake with Lolab Valley as the companion destination on the return route.

Bon Voyagers handles the pickup from Jammu Railway Station or Airport and covers three nights with a private Innova, Xylo or Scorpio class vehicle throughout. Day 1 drives north through the Banihal Tunnel into the Kashmir Valley and northwest through Sopore to the Wular Lake western shoreline for the overnight. Day 2 gives the full Wular day — the lake, the Bandipora town eastern shore approach and the bird activity on the water. Day 3 moves south from Bandipora into the Lolab Valley for the afternoon before the Srinagar overnight. Day 4 returns to Jammu via the Banihal Tunnel. No Protected Area Permit is required for any destination on this route. Daily breakfast and dinner on MAP basis throughout.

4 Days

The wular lake kashmir tour package begins at Jammu Railway Station or Airport where the Bon Voyagers vehicle is waiting. The drive north from Jammu through the Banihal Tunnel and then northwest through the Kashmir Valley to the Wular Lake western shore covers approximately 270 kilometres and takes around 4.5 to 5 hours. The route exits the tunnel at Qazigund in South Kashmir and then follows the main valley highway north through Srinagar and continues to Sopore — the apple trading town on the Jhelum whose wholesale market handles a significant portion of the valley's orchard output.
From Sopore the road turns northeast toward the Wular western shoreline. The lake first becomes visible from the road at a distance that makes its scale immediately apparent — the water extends further than the eye organises into a single frame. The overnight base is on the lake's western approach. Overnight at Wular Lake

The Wular morning is the centre of this wular lake kashmir tour package. The lake at approximately 1,580 metres carries a different quality from Dal Lake at every level — the scale is larger by a factor that the eye adjusts to slowly, the fishing boat activity on the water runs on a working timetable rather than a tourist one and the Jhelum enters from the south at a point where the river and the lake are barely distinguishable from each other in high water season. The shoreline vegetation — floating and emergent aquatic plants that the seasonal flood pulse replenishes — gives the lake edge its own particular character.
The drive from the western shore around to Bandipora on the eastern shore covers approximately 25 to 30 kilometres and takes around 45 minutes — the eastern approach giving a different read of the lake's orientation against the Bandipora hills behind. The bird activity on the water is concentrated in the morning hours — in winter the lake carries significant migratory waterfowl populations though sightings vary by season and are not guaranteed. Overnight at Wular Lake western shore or Bandipora.

The drive from Bandipora south into the Lolab Valley approach covers approximately 30 to 35 kilometres in around 45 minutes to 1 hour. Lolab Valley in Kupwara district carries the apple orchard and walnut grove belt covered in full in Package 8 of this Bon Voyagers series — the Kalaroos Caves, the village of Lalpur and the Chandigam settlement at the upper end of the valley trail. This wular lake kashmir tour package uses Lolab as a Day 3 afternoon stop rather than an overnight base — the group moves through the orchard lanes and the Lolab River bank in the afternoon before the drive south to Srinagar for the final overnight.
The Lolab to Srinagar drive covers approximately 95 kilometres in around 2.5 to 3 hours routing through Kupwara, Handwara and Sopore. The Srinagar overnight gives the circuit a comfortable city base before the Day 4 return to Jammu. Overnight in Srinagar.

The final day of the wular lake kashmir tour package drives south from Srinagar through the Banihal Tunnel back to Jammu — approximately 250 kilometres in around 4 to 4.5 hours. The Srinagar morning before the tunnel approach allows a final stop at Lal Chowk for saffron, Kashmiri dry fruit or craft purchases.
Groups with afternoon train departures from Jammu Tawi station are well within reach of a Srinagar morning start through the tunnel. The Banihal Tunnel crossing on the return closes the North Kashmir circuit cleanly — Jammu to Wular to Bandipora to Lolab to Srinagar to Jammu, a loop through the northern end of the valley that the standard Srinagar-based Kashmir package does not reach. The Bon Voyagers vehicle drops at Jammu Railway Station or Airport on arrival.
