Overview
The monks at Tawang Monastery have been performing the Torgya ritual dances every January for centuries. They do not do it for tourists. The tourists are welcome to watch, which is what makes this tawang festival tour package worth planning around, 6 Days, 5 Nights timed to the festival window with the private vehicle and permits sorted before you arrive.
Torgya runs in January, Losar, the Tibetan new year, follows in February. Both bring a different energy to Tawang than any other time of year. The town fills with Monpa families in traditional dress, the monastery is active with rituals and the whole place feels less like a destination and more like something you walked into that was already happening.
Day-wise Itinerary
6-day travel plan — tap any day to view full details.
The tawang festival tour package starts in Guwahati, warm and ordinary, our team at the airport exit and the nine-hour climb to Bomdila ahead. Bhalukpong is the Inner Line Permit check, the Tenga valley the slow middle section, and Bomdila at 8,000 feet is where the temperature reminds you that Tawang is considerably higher.
Check in, eat well, sleep early. The monastery and the festival are two days away and you want to arrive in reasonable shape.
One hundred and eighty kilometres and seven to eight hours with Sela Pass at 13,700 feet in the middle. In festival season the pass can carry snow, the cold lake just below the top frozen or close to it, and the road lined with prayer flags in both directions.
Jaswant Garh War Memorial and Nuranang Falls break the descent before Tawang at 10,000 feet. The monastery is visible on its ridge from the approach road. The Arunachal this time of year looks nothing like the rest of the country from a moving car.
This is the day the tawang festival tour package is built around. Torgya or Losar depending on the departure month, the monastery courtyard filling before dawn with monks, locals and the specific kind of traveller who came this far deliberately.
The Torgya Cham dances are performed in full ceremonial dress with ritual horns and cymbals, and the effigy burning that closes the ceremony is something most attendees cannot properly describe afterward. The Tawang War Memorial, Urgelling Monastery and the town fill the afternoon. Sleep early.
The morning after a festival always carries a particular quiet. Monks going back to routine, the courtyard that was full yesterday looking different empty. Breakfast, check out, and the 140 kilometre return over Sela Pass toward Dirang, about seven hours.
The temperature climbs steadily on the descent and Dirang at 4,900 feet feels warm by comparison. The hot spring near town is a genuine comfort after days at high altitude. The tawang festival tour package uses this Dirang night to step the body down gently.
The hills unwind over 200 kilometres and seven hours, the road dropping through Bhalukpong and out into flat Assam. Tezpur in winter sits warm enough for a light jacket by afternoon, which after four days at altitude feels almost foreign.
One comfortable overnight here and the Guwahati transfer tomorrow is four to five hours rather than a desperate full-day push.
Tezpur to Guwahati, our representative at the airport drop, and the tawang festival tour package is closed.
What stays is harder to describe than the drive itself. Most people find it shows up again as a calendar reminder the following January.

Best Time to Visit
Arunachal Pradesh is most accessible from March to early November, when Sela Pass and the Tawang roads are generally clear of heavy snow. During peak months, daytime temperatures in Tawang range between 10 and 20 degrees Celsius, though nights stay cold year round. September offers a perfect balance of manageable weather and stunning visibility before winter conditions begin in November.
