Overview

Chatpal sits in the Shangus area of the Anantnag district at the end of a road that narrows considerably after Chitergul and arrives at a valley that is closed on all sides by mountain walls. The Bringhi River runs through the floor of it and the villages along the banks carry the apple and walnut orchard economy that most of the Anantnag district runs on — except that Chatpal has none of the tourist infrastructure that the Anantnag district’s more visited spots have accumulated over the years. The Gujjar pastoral community moves through the upper pastures above the valley in summer and the interaction between the settled orchard farmers in the lower villages and the seasonal Gujjar camps on the slopes above gives the place a layered agricultural character that is worth a full day on the ground to understand. This chatpal valley kashmir package is built around that day.

Bon Voyagers handles the pickup from Srinagar Airport and covers three nights with a private Innova, Xylo or Scorpio class vehicle throughout. Day 2 drives south through Anantnag and Achabal into the Shangus belt and up to Chatpal for the overnight at the valley tourist cottage. Day 3 gives the full Chatpal day — the Bringhi River, the village lanes, the upper orchard walks and the Gujjar summer camps on the slopes above the settled zone. The return on Day 3 afternoon routes through Kokernag for a stop at the spring gardens before the drive to Srinagar for the final overnight. Day 4 closes at Srinagar Airport. Daily breakfast and dinner on MAP basis throughout.

4 Days

The chatpal valley kashmir package begins at Srinagar Airport where the Bon Voyagers vehicle is waiting at arrival. The first day stays in Srinagar — the drive south to the Anantnag district on Day 2 is best started fresh and the Srinagar base gives the group a comfortable overnight before the route moves into South Kashmir. The afternoon covers the Dal Lake Shikara ride, the Mughal Gardens at Nishat and Shalimar and the Hazratbal Shrine on the northern shore.
The old city lanes around Lal Chowk close the evening. For this chatpal valley kashmir package the Srinagar overnight is the last night of full hotel infrastructure before two days in a valley tourist cottage — worth noting before Day 2 departure. Overnight in Srinagar.

The drive south from Srinagar to Chatpal covers approximately 90 kilometres routing through Anantnag and Achabal and then southeast into the Shangus area, taking around 2.5 to 3 hours. The road to Chatpal turns off the main Anantnag highway at Chitergul — a small roadhead settlement from which the track climbs and narrows into the Bringhi River valley proper. The Bringhi runs alongside the road in the upper section and the valley walls close in progressively as the vehicle moves toward the Chatpal base.
The government tourist cottage sits in the lower part of the main valley settlement and is the overnight base for this chatpal valley kashmir package — basic but clean accommodation in a position where the river sound carries through the walls after dark. The Chatpal arrival afternoon is for a first walk along the Bringhi and an orientation through the nearest village lanes before the full day begins tomorrow. Overnight at Chatpal Valley.

The full day in Chatpal is the heart of the chatpal valley kashmir package. The valley floor along the Bringhi River carries apple and walnut orchards in the lower settled zone — the same orchard species as the broader Anantnag district but here without the highway-adjacent commercialisation that the main valley fruit belt has developed. The village of Thimran sits on the far bank of the Bringhi, accessed by a small wooden bridge over the river — a slightly larger settlement than the Chatpal base with terraced orchard plots on the slope above the main lane and the particular quietness of a place that is not expecting visitors. The Gujjar seasonal camps on the upper slopes above the settled valley are visible from the Thimran lane on clear mornings — the smoke from the morning fires, the livestock on the upper pasture edge.
The afternoon drive from Chatpal south to Kokernag covers approximately 35 to 40 kilometres in around 1 to 1.5 hours. Kokernag sits at approximately 2,050 metres with its spring-fed botanical garden and the trout farm documentation. The Srinagar drive from Kokernag covers approximately 80 kilometres in around 2 hours. Overnight in Srinagar.

The final morning of the chatpal valley kashmir package is in Srinagar. The drive from most city hotel positions to Srinagar Airport takes under 20 minutes on clear days. Groups with afternoon or evening departures have the morning for a final walk through the old city — Lal Chowk, the craft markets and the Jhelum riverfront.
For a group returning from two days in the Chatpal valley the Srinagar street level carries the particular reentry quality that a genuinely quiet place always gives to a return to the city. Groups with morning departures should flag timing with the Bon team at booking so the Day 3 Kokernag to Srinagar drive is structured with enough buffer for an early Day 4 airport start. The Bon Voyagers vehicle drops at Srinagar Airport for the return flight.
