The proper climb begins, about 140 kilometres and six hours through the Tenga valley to Bomdila at 8,000 feet, where the monastery and the viewpoint are worth a stop. From Bomdila it drops gently into Dirang, small and orcharded at around 4,900 feet with a hot water spring running below the old dzong.
The afternoon goes to Sangti Valley, flat and open and full of grazing horses fifteen kilometres from town. Children seem to enjoy that stretch as much as anything on the entire trip.
