Overview

Most people who have been to the Andaman Islands have not heard of Interview Island. It sits off the western coast of Middle Andaman, accessible by a boat ride of approximately one to one and a half hours from Mayabunder harbour, and it has no permanent human population. What it does have is a population of feral elephants — descendants of animals brought to the island during the British period for timber extraction work and left there when the operations ended. The island is a designated wildlife sanctuary. The elephants are wild, the forest is dense and a sighting on any given day depends on where the animals have moved. This is not a zoo visit with a guaranteed result at the end of it. It is a boat ride to an uninhabited island where wild elephants live and the experience of being in that place — regardless of whether an elephant appears on the path — is unlike anything else the Andaman Islands offer. This mayabunder andaman package is built around that specific fact.

Bon Voyagers manages the complete ground programme from Port Blair Airport arrival. The six days move north in two stages — Rangat on Day 1, then Mayabunder on Day 2 with the Karen village visit and Karmatang Beach in the afternoon. Day 3 is the Interview Island full day excursion. Day 4 continues north to Diglipur for the Ross and Smith Islands sandbar in the afternoon. Day 5 is the long return drive to Port Blair. Day 6 is the departure. Private AC Ertiga or Xylo class vehicle covers all road transfers throughout. Boat tickets for Interview Island and Ross and Smith Islands, forest department permit for the wildlife sanctuary and all entry charges are included. Daily breakfast and dinner on MAP basis at all hotels throughout.

6 Days

The mayabunder andaman package begins at Port Blair Airport where the Bon Voyagers representative meets the group on arrival. The drive north to Rangat covers approximately 170 kilometres through South and Middle Andaman, taking around 5 to 6 hours including the convoy passage through the Jarawa Tribal Reserve near Jirkatang where stopping and photography are strictly prohibited under Indian law. The road north of the reserve opens into Middle Andaman’s forest landscape — settlements thinning, the road quieter, the air different from the south.

The Moricedera mangrove creek near Rangat is the afternoon stop — a tidal waterway through dense mangrove forest navigable by small boat, the canopy closing the sky overhead in the narrower sections. It is a good introduction to the Middle Andaman ecosystem before the island’s more dramatic northern geography takes over from Day 2 onward. Overnight at Rangat.

The drive from Rangat to Mayabunder covers approximately 70 kilometres through North Andaman, taking around 2 hours. Mayabunder is a small administrative town with a working harbour, a market and a pace that has no connection to the tourism economy of Port Blair. The Karen community settlement is the afternoon — the descendants of Burmese Karen people brought to the Andamans during the British colonial period, who have maintained their own language, their hand-weaving tradition and their community identity across multiple generations on this island chain.

The hand-woven cloth produced in the settlement is made on traditional looms and the craft has not been commercialised in the way that Kashmiri weaving or Manipuri textiles have been — the visit is to a working community, not a heritage display. Karmatang Beach in the evening is a long, undeveloped stretch north of the town, a documented turtle nesting site between October and March and worth the drive regardless of season. Overnight at Mayabunder.

The boat from Mayabunder harbour to Interview Island departs early morning and takes approximately one to one and a half hours across open water. Interview Island is a designated wildlife sanctuary with no permanent human habitation and no tourist infrastructure — no food, no water and no facilities on the island. The group carries everything needed for the day from Mayabunder. The forest department permit for entry to the sanctuary is collected before departure.

The feral elephant population on Interview Island are wild animals living in dense forest — they are not habituated to human presence in the way that elephants in managed reserves sometimes are. Sightings depend entirely on where the animals have moved on that day. The Bon team coordinates with local boat operators who know the island’s patterns, but no sighting can be promised or guaranteed. The island experience on this mayabunder andaman package is worth the boat ride for the forest, the silence and the specific quality of being on an uninhabited island in a wildlife sanctuary regardless of what appears. Return to Mayabunder by afternoon. Overnight at Mayabunder.

The drive from Mayabunder to Diglipur covers approximately 80 kilometres through North Andaman, taking around 2 to 2.5 hours. The afternoon in Diglipur is for the Ross and Smith Islands sandbar — the boat from Aerial Bay jetty takes approximately 30 minutes and the departure time is set around the low tide window for the travel date. The sandbar connecting the two islands is only walkable when the tide has dropped enough to expose it — the crossing window is approximately 2 to 3 hours around the low tide peak.

In the context of this mayabunder andaman package, the sandbar visit on Day 4 follows a day on an uninhabited wildlife sanctuary island and the contrast is instructive — the feral elephant forest of Interview Island and the pale sandbar between Ross and Smith are both parts of the same archipelago and both entirely outside the experience of anything the south circuit delivers. Overnight at Diglipur.

Day 5 of this mayabunder andaman package is the long return drive from Diglipur to Port Blair — approximately 320 kilometres taking 9 to 11 hours with road stops. The convoy through the Jarawa Tribal Reserve on the southbound return applies the same rules as the northbound passage — no stopping, no photography, no interaction.

The drive south after four days in the North Andaman forest and coast carries a particular quality — the road back to Port Blair passes through the same landscape that was new on Day 1 and reads differently after the Karen village, the Interview Island boat ride and the sandbar walk. The Baratang mud volcano site is a possible stop if convoy timing allows, confirmed by the Bon team on the day. Port Blair by evening. Overnight in Port Blair.

The final morning of the mayabunder andaman package is in Port Blair. Groups with afternoon or evening flights have time for Ross Island near Port Blair — Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Island — reached by boat from Aberdeen Jetty, the colonial ruins standing open to the forest, deer moving through the cleared paths between buildings. North Bay is available for a glass bottom boat ride over the reef before the airport drop.

The Sagarika government emporium near the clock tower carries Andaman shell craft and spices at fixed prices. The Bon Voyagers vehicle drops at Port Blair Airport. Six days covering the Karen community, Interview Island’s feral elephants and the Ross-Smith sandbar represent the Andaman Islands at a depth that the standard south circuit does not reach.

Best Time to Visit

The boat crossing from Mayabunder harbour to Interview Island Wildlife Sanctuary is most reliably safe between October and May when the Andaman Sea is calmer and the sea conditions in the channel between Mayabunder and the island are manageable. The monsoon from June through September brings rough seas that frequently prevent the Interview Island crossing entirely and the sanctuary excursion cannot proceed when conditions are unsafe. The best overall window for this mayabunder andaman package is October through April, with the winter months of November through February offering the clearest weather for both the island crossing and the Karmatang Beach turtle nesting season which runs from October to March. The Karen village visit and the Ross-Smith sandbar excursion at Diglipur are accessible year-round but the boat-dependent elements require favourable sea conditions.
