The itanagar tour package starts at Guwahati airport where our representative meets the group and drives north-east toward the Arunachal hills, about 160 to 180 kilometres and three to four hours via the Banderdewa check post where the Inner Line Permit is verified.
Itanagar arrives in the early afternoon at around 300 metres elevation, warm and compact against the forested hills. The rest of the afternoon is free for settling in and a first walk around the centre, the gompa dome visible from most of the upper roads as a useful point of orientation.
The Ita Fort in the morning, before the day heats up. The 14th-century brick structure sits on a forested ridge and the walk through the ruins takes about an hour, the scale of the surviving walls making clear this was serious construction for its time. The Jawaharlal Nehru State Museum in the late morning covers all 26 tribal communities of Arunachal Pradesh in one building, from the Apatani to the Nocte, with artefacts, textiles and documentation that no individual village visit provides in sequence.
Ganga Lake in the afternoon, the natural lake in the capital's quieter southeastern quarter, and the gompa complex before evening.
The twin town of Naharlagun is five kilometres from Itanagar and has a different character, more market and less government, with the district bazaar and the railway station area worth a morning hour. The itanagar tour package uses the afternoon for the Doimukh drive, about 35 kilometres from Itanagar where the Kameng river comes out of the hills into the plains.
Pappu Hills viewpoint on the return gives one of the cleaner elevated looks at the capital from above, a perspective the city streets do not offer from inside.
