Overview

Most visitors to theΒ Andaman IslandsΒ spend half a day at the Cellular Jail and call the history done. The colonial and penal history of these islands is considerably deeper than that. Viper Island in Port Blair harbour was the original detention site for prisoners transported to the Andamans β€” the gallows there predate the Cellular Jail by decades and the island served as the first chapter of the Andaman penal settlement from approximately the 1850s. The Cellular Jail, built between 1896 and 1906, was the institutional continuation of what Viper Island began β€” the solitary confinement system, the oil press labour, the 698 cells designed to prevent prisoners from knowing who else was imprisoned alongside them. Ross Island held the British administrative apparatus that managed both β€” the chief commissioner’s residence, the church, the club, all of it running on the same island as the jail it governed. The Anthropological Museum carries the history that predates the colonial period β€” the indigenous communities of the Andamans whose presence here is thousands of years older than the penal colony. This andaman heritage package covers all of it across five days with a Havelock day trip on Day 4 because the reef and the beach are part of what the Andaman Islands are and the heritage alone is not the whole story.

Bon VoyagersΒ manages the complete ground programme from Port Blair Airport arrival. Day 1 covers the Anthropological Museum and the Cellular Jail. Day 2 covers Viper Island, Ross Island and the Samudrika Naval Marine Museum. Day 3 is the Port Blair heritage deep day β€” Aberdeen Bazaar, the Chatham Saw Mill on Chatham Island and the Port Blair administrative heritage walk. Day 4 is the Havelock day trip β€” the ferry to Radhanagar Beach and the return by evening. Day 5 is North Bay and the departure. Private AC Ertiga or Xylo class vehicle covers all Port Blair road transfers. Boat tickets for Viper Island, Ross Island and North Bay, ferry tickets for Havelock and all entry charges are included. Daily breakfast and dinner on MAP basis throughout all five days.

5 Days

The andaman heritage package begins at Port Blair Airport where the Bon Voyagers representative meets the group on arrival. The Anthropological Museum is the first stop β€” and deliberately so. The indigenous communities of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands β€” the Andamanese, Onge, Jarawa, Sentinelese and Nicobarese peoples β€” have inhabited these islands for thousands of years. The museum covers their histories, languages, material culture and the severe population decline that the colonial and post-colonial period produced. Starting the heritage circuit with the Anthropological Museum means the Cellular Jail visit that follows reads differently β€” the colonial penal settlement is not the beginning of the Andaman story, it is a chapter in a much longer one.

The Cellular Jail in the late afternoon β€” the seven radiating wings built between 1896 and 1906, the individual cells, the oil press β€” followed by the evening light and sound show of approximately 45 minutes in the courtyard. Overnight in Port Blair.

Viper Island is the first boat departure of this andaman heritage package β€” a 15 to 20 minute crossing from Phoenix Bay Jetty to the island where the British established the first Andaman detention facility in the 1850s, decades before the Cellular Jail was built. The gallows on Viper Island are among the oldest colonial penal structures still standing in India. The island today is largely forest reclaiming the ruins of the original jail structures β€” the same process visible on Ross Island but in an earlier chapter of the same story. Ross Island in the afternoon β€” now Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Island β€” was the administrative headquarters from approximately 1858 until the 1941 earthquake, the residence of the chief commissioner who governed both the island and the jail.

The British left in 1942 and the Japanese occupied the island through the war years until 1945. The Samudrika Naval Marine Museum in the late afternoon closes Day 2 with the natural and cultural history of the archipelago β€” the ecology, the marine biology and the tribal communities covered alongside the colonial naval history. Overnight in Port Blair.

The Aberdeen Bazaar fish market in the morning is the working-port character of Port Blair at its most direct β€” the catch arriving, the sellers at the stalls, the harbour commerce that has been here in various forms since the settlement began. The Chatham Saw Mill on Chatham Island, connected to Port Blair by road across the Chatham Bridge, is the Day 3 centrepiece of this andaman heritage package β€” among the oldest working saw mills in Asia, operational since the British period and processing Andaman timber through a facility that represents the colonial extraction economy as clearly as the Cellular Jail represents the colonial penal economy.

The mill operates as a functional site and the scale of the equipment, the age of the facility and the forest behind it give the visit a different quality from the ruin-based heritage of the previous two days. The Port Blair administrative heritage walk in the afternoon covers the old British-era buildings still standing in the city β€” the courthouse, the administrative district, the traces of the colonial layout that remain visible in the city's older sections. Overnight in Port Blair.

Day 4 of this andaman heritage package is the deliberate departure from Port Blair's history β€” the morning ferry to Havelock Island, Radhanagar Beach in the afternoon and the return ferry by evening. Three consecutive days of colonial penal history, indigenous community history and the working heritage of a port city built on a prison economy earn a day that has no museum and no ruin. Radhanagar Beach on Havelock's western side β€” the long arc of white sand backed by uncleared forest, the water shifting from pale green in the shallows to a deeper blue-green further out β€” is the Andaman Islands at their most straightforward.

The afternoon is for the beach. The evening ferry returns to Port Blair. The contrast between the Viper Island gallows of Day 2 and Radhanagar Beach on Day 4 is not accidental β€” it is the full range of what the Andaman Islands hold and both are necessary for the picture to be complete. Overnight in Port Blair.

The final morning of the andaman heritage package is at North Bay Island β€” reached by boat from Aberdeen Jetty, the coral reef closest to Port Blair with glass bottom boat rides and snorkelling available from registered operators at charges paid locally. The reef at North Bay gives the natural history dimension that sits underneath the colonial and penal history covered in the previous four days β€” the Andaman Islands are a reef ecosystem and a tribal homeland and a colonial penal settlement and a beach destination all at once and this andaman heritage package has covered more of those layers than any single standard itinerary does.

The Sagarika government emporium near the clock tower carries Andaman craft at fixed prices for a final purchase. The Bon Voyagers vehicle drops at Port Blair Airport for the return flight.
