Overview
The reef at Elephant Beach on Havelock Island during the day is well documented — the coral formations, the reef fish at snorkelling depth, the boat ride from the jetty. At night the same reef operates on an entirely different set of rules. The andaman night snorkelling package begins at Port Blair Airport where the Bon Voyagers representative meets the group on arrival. The first afternoon is the Cellular Jail — the colonial prison built between 1896 and 1906 across seven radiating wings where political prisoners from across India were held in solitary confinement during the British period. The evening light and sound show runs approximately 45 minutes in the jail courtyard after dark, covering the history of the freedom movement and the names of those imprisoned here.
An early night follows. Day 2 takes the morning ferry to Havelock and the afternoon at Radhanagar Beach is the first island experience — the group needs to be rested and the Havelock pace established before the Day 3 night session. Overnight in Port Blair.
The private ferry from Port Blair to Havelock departs Phoenix Bay Jetty and covers approximately 57 kilometres in around 1.5 to 2.5 hours depending on sea conditions. Havelock — officially Swaraj Dweep — is where this andaman night snorkelling package does its main work. Radhanagar Beach on the island’s western side is the afternoon programme — the long arc of white sand backed by uncleared forest, the water shifting from pale green in the shallows to a deeper blue-green further out, no commercial strip on the beach itself.
The afternoon at Radhanagar is the day registration — the group learning the tide, the light, the pace of the island before the more specific programmes of Day 3. The Elephant Beach night session is tomorrow evening. The Radhanagar afternoon is the unhurried entry before it. Overnight at Havelock.
Day 3 is the centrepiece of this andaman night snorkelling package. The morning is Elephant Beach — a 45-minute boat ride from the main Havelock jetty to a bay where coral formations are visible at relatively shallow depths close to the shore. The daytime snorkelling session at Elephant Beach covers the reef in daylight — the parrotfish active and feeding on the coral, the angelfish moving through the formations, the reef structure itself clear in the morning light. Equipment is hired from registered operators at the beach at charges paid locally. The afternoon returns to Radhanagar Beach.
After dark the group returns to Elephant Beach for the night snorkelling session with a registered operator — the same reef, the same shallow water, completely different in character. Parrotfish sleeping in their mucus cocoons, octopus out and hunting, moray eels in the open, the torch beam producing the reef at night as a place the daytime version gave no preparation for. The ferry from Havelock to Neil Island takes approximately 30 to 60 minutes — a short crossing that shifts the register after the intensity of Day 3. Neil — officially Shaheed Dweep — is the quieter island and Day 4 of this andaman night snorkelling package uses it as the wind-down after the two Havelock days. Bharatpur Beach on Neil’s eastern side has calm, shallow water and is one of the better swimming spots in the Andamans for those who want the ocean without significant current or depth.
The natural bridge at Laxmanpur on the western side is a coral rock formation shaped by wave erosion, best seen at low tide when the reef around it is partly exposed and the wave action through the gaps makes the sound that gives the formation its particular character. Sitapur Beach on the eastern tip in the late afternoon faces open water and the low tide exposes reef detail that most Neil Island visitors miss by leaving too early. Overnight at Neil Island.
The ferry from Neil Island back to Port Blair takes approximately 1 to 2 hours. The Neil morning before the ferry is worth the early start — Sitapur Beach at low tide in the morning light gives a final reef-edge hour before the island stay ends. Back in Port Blair the afternoon covers Ross Island — now Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Island — reached by boat from Aberdeen Jetty, the colonial ruins and the deer in the forest. North Bay is available for a glass bottom boat ride over the reef.
