Overview

Most travellers avoid Kerala in the monsoon. That is the single best reason to go. From June to September the state receives the southwest monsoon — the tea plantation rows at Munnar turn a green so saturated it reads almost unreal, waterfalls that appear only in the rain months drop from the ghat road, the Periyar forest at Thekkady fills with sound and the backwater canal at Alleppey mirrors the grey monsoon sky. Accommodation rates across Kerala drop between 30 and 50 percent from peak season levels. The crowds at every destination thin. This kerala monsoon tour package is built for the traveller who chooses a destination rather than follows one.

Bon Voyagers manages the complete ground programme for this kerala monsoon tour package from Kochi Airport arrival. The private AC Innova Crysta covers all road transfers throughout. Four nights accommodation — two at Munnar, one at Thekkady, one Alleppey houseboat night — daily breakfast and dinner on MAP basis. Houseboat lunch and evening tea on the Alleppey night, Periyar Lake boat ride entry and all sightseeing transfers as per the itinerary are included. The per person cost of this kerala monsoon tour package is ₹18,500 — the same circuit available at peak season for significantly more.

5 Days

This kerala monsoon tour package begins at Kochi Airport where the Bon Voyagers representative meets the group. The drive from Kochi to Munnar covers approximately 130 kilometres through the Ernakulam plains before climbing into the Idukki hills. In the monsoon the ghat road to Munnar is at its most dramatic — cloud patches sit in the valley below the road at certain elevations, waterfalls that are dry through the rest of the year drop off the rock faces beside the highway and the rubber and cardamom estates on the way up are deep, wet green.
Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls run at full volume. Munnar arrives in cloud. Dinner and overnight at Munnar.

Munnar in the monsoon does not give clear-sky viewpoints — it gives something different. The cloud moves through the tea rows at ground level on some mornings, so that the plantation rows disappear into white a hundred metres from where you stand. The rain pauses and starts unpredictably. The temperature at 1,600 metres with rain is cool enough for a layer at night.
The morning programme is the Mattupetty Dam and the Kundala tea estate road — not for views of the valley, which the cloud takes, but for the drive through the wet plantation rows at close range. The afternoon is a tea estate walk — the smell of worked tea leaves in rain is the specific Munnar monsoon sensory moment. Overnight at Munnar.

The Munnar to Thekkady drive covers approximately 90 to 105 kilometres through cardamom and spice plantation country, descending from Munnar's elevation. The Periyar Tiger Reserve in the monsoon is dense and active — the forest floor receives full water and the vegetation is at its thickest. The Periyar Lake boat ride runs through the monsoon when weather permits — the reserve's eco-tourism programme confirms morning departure conditions on the day.
Elephant movement to the water edge is well documented through the monsoon months and the forest sounds from the boat are different from any other season. The evening spice market in Thekkady is fragrant in the humid air. Overnight at Thekkady.

The drive from Thekkady to Alleppey covers approximately 140 kilometres through the Kottayam rubber belt — around three hours. Houseboat check-in at Alleppey is at noon. The Alleppey backwater in the monsoon is a different register from the November-February version. The water level is higher, the canal banks are denser and greener and the mist that sits over the paddy fields in the morning hours takes longer to lift.
Rain on the houseboat roof while the vessel is moored for the night is a specific sound that travellers on this kerala monsoon tour package consistently mention. Lunch and evening tea are served on board as the houseboat cruises through the afternoon canal network. Overnight on the houseboat.

Houseboat checkout is by 9 AM. The canal at dawn in the monsoon — the mist lower and heavier than the dry months, the paddy fields a deep green and the birds on the rain-darkened bank — is the closing image of this kerala monsoon tour package.
After checkout the vehicle drives to Kochi Airport — approximately 55 kilometres from Alleppey, taking around 1.5 hours. Travellers with afternoon flights have time for a Marine Drive walk along the Kochi waterfront or the Fort Kochi lanes in the rain, which carry a different character from the same streets in peak season. The Bon Voyagers vehicle drops at Kochi Airport. The kerala monsoon tour package ends here.

Best Time to Visit

This kerala monsoon tour package is purpose-built for June to September travel, when the southwest monsoon brings saturated green tea rows at Munnar, full-volume waterfalls on the ghat road, and a denser, more active Periyar forest at Thekkady. Accommodation rates drop 30 to 50 percent from peak season and crowds thin significantly. Heavy rain can occasionally suspend Periyar boat departures or affect houseboat conditions for a few hours, but long dry windows occur regularly through the week.
