Overview
Scuba diving puts a tank on your back and a regulator in your mouth and lets you stay underwater for forty minutes. Freediving removes all of that. One breath. You descend on it, you spend whatever time the breath allows at the reef and you ascend on what is left. The Andaman Sea at Havelock is an environment where this matters — the visibility in the October to May season is good enough that the full descent line is visible from the surface and the reef at fifteen metres is clear from the moment you commit to the dive. The andaman freediving package is built around the AIDA or SSI affiliated freediving course at Havelock — two to three days of theory, confined water breath-hold practice and open water depth sessions that take a first-time freediver from the surface to their first confident descent and back. The reef experienced through freediving is different from the reef experienced through scuba — no regulator noise, no bubbles, no tank weight, the fish behaving around a freediver differently from how they behave around a scuba diver because the freediver is quieter and closer to what the fish understand the water to contain.
Bon Voyagers manages the complete ground programme from Port Blair Airport arrival for this Andaman Islands freediving package. Day 1 covers Port Blair and the Cellular Jail. Day 2 takes the morning ferry to Havelock and the freediving course begins in the afternoon with theory and confined water sessions. Day 3 is the open water depth progression — descents on the line, the reef at freediving depth. Day 4 is the reef freediving sessions at Elephant Beach and the Havelock reef sites. Day 5 crosses to Neil Island for a shallow reef session before the return to Port Blair and the departure. Vehicle transfers at Port Blair and Havelock, ferry tickets and MAP meals throughout are included. Freediving course fees and all session charges are paid directly to the registered freediving operator.

The andaman freediving package begins at Port Blair Airport where the Bon Voyagers representative meets the group on arrival. The first afternoon is the Cellular Jail — built between 1896 and 1906 across seven radiating wings where political prisoners from across India were held in solitary confinement. The evening light and sound show runs approximately 45 minutes in the jail courtyard after dark.
The freediving course begins at Havelock tomorrow afternoon — the Day 1 evening is for rest and for the breathing practice that the course instructor will likely assign as pre-course preparation. Freediving starts with breathing. Most people have never paid deliberate attention to how they breathe. The hour before sleep on Day 1 of this andaman freediving package is worth spending on that attention. Overnight in Port Blair.
The private ferry from Port Blair to Havelock departs Phoenix Bay Jetty and covers approximately 57 kilometres in around 1.5 to 2.5 hours. The andaman freediving package course begins at the Havelock dive centre in the afternoon — the theory component covers the physiology of breath-hold diving, the mammalian dive reflex, equalisation technique for the ears and sinuses during descent, safety protocols and the buddy system that governs all freediving. The confined water session follows in shallow water — static apnea at the surface, breath-hold duration with relaxation techniques, the first experience of the body’s response to the dive reflex when the face enters the water.
The instruction at this stage is as much about removing tension as building technique. A freediver who is tense holds less than they are capable of. The andaman freediving package builds from relaxation outward. Overnight at Havelock.
Day 3 is the open water component of the andaman freediving package — the transition from confined water breath-hold practice to actual descent on the dive line in the open ocean. The dive line is a weighted rope hanging vertically from a surface float to a target depth — the freediver ducks below the surface, equalises the ears on the descent and follows the line down. The depth progression on Day 3 starts conservatively — the instructor sets the target depth based on the individual’s equalisation ability and comfort from the previous day and increases it across the session as confidence builds.
The Andaman water at Havelock in the October to May window is approximately 27 to 29 degrees Celsius — warm enough to dive in swimwear though a thin wetsuit reduces heat loss across repeated dives. The reef appears below the line as the depth increases. By the end of Day 3 of this andaman freediving package the group has made their first genuine descents into the Andaman Sea on a single breath. Overnight at Havelock.
Day 4 of this andaman freediving package moves from line work to reef freediving — the application of the previous two days’ technique to the actual Havelock reef environment. Elephant Beach on Havelock’s northern edge is the morning site — the reef here starts at 2 to 5 metres below the surface and extends deeper, coral formations and reef fish accessible at depths that a competent entry-level freediver can reach on a comfortable breath-hold. The difference between snorkelling and freediving the same reef is the depth and the duration — a freediver at 8 to 10 metres is inside the reef structure rather than looking down at it from the surface, the fish responding differently to a diver who is quiet and breathless than to one trailing bubbles.
The afternoon session at a second reef site consolidates the technique in a different environment. Radhanagar Beach closes the day — the long arc of white sand and the late afternoon light that the andaman freediving package has been working around and which the tired, water-logged, breath-saturated body earns completely by Day 4. Overnight at Havelock.
The ferry from Havelock to Neil Island on the final morning of this andaman freediving package takes approximately 30 to 60 minutes. Neil Island’s reef sections are shallower than the Havelock sites and the calm water on the eastern side of the island makes it a good environment for a final relaxed session — snorkelling or shallow freediving depending on the group’s energy after three days of breath-hold work. The natural bridge at Laxmanpur on Neil’s western side is the afternoon hour before the ferry — a coral rock formation shaped by wave erosion, worth the walk.
The Neil to Port Blair ferry takes approximately 1 to 2 hours. The Bon Voyagers vehicle meets the group at Phoenix Bay Jetty and drops at Port Blair Airport. The andaman freediving package ends with a group of freedivers where five days ago there were none — the certification, the depth logged and the specific experience of the Andaman reef on a single breath are the things they carry home.

Best Time to Visit
Havelock Island freediving operates within the October to May open season when the Andaman Sea conditions are calm and the visibility for the descent line work is at its best. The June to September monsoon brings rough sea conditions that make open water freediving sessions unsafe and the course cannot proceed during this period. Within the open season, October through February is the best window — calm water, good visibility and water temperatures around 27 to 29 degrees Celsius that are comfortable for extended breath-hold sessions without rapid heat loss. The static apnea and confined water sessions on Day 2 can proceed in most weather conditions; the open water depth sessions on Day 3 and the reef freediving on Day 4 require calm sea conditions at the Elephant Beach site.
