Overview

TheΒ Andaman IslandsΒ hold approximately 270 recorded bird species of which around 13 are endemic to the archipelago β€” found on these islands and nowhere else on earth. The Andaman woodpecker, the Andaman serpent eagle, the Andaman shama, the Andaman drongo, the Andaman treepie and the Andaman scops owl are not found in mainland India, not found in Southeast Asia and not found anywhere else in the world. They exist here, in the rainforest of Saddle Peak National Park, in the mangrove edge at Chiriya Tapu, in the forest corridors north of Mayabunder, in the Mount Harriet trail above Port Blair. The birding community has been quietly building a case for the Andaman Islands as one of the finest endemic birding destinations in Asia for several years and that case is now appearing on birding YouTube channels and wildlife Instagram accounts with increasing frequency. This andaman birding package builds the circuit those endemics require β€” six days across the south and north forest zones, early morning starts, pre-dawn Saddle Peak and the mangrove waterway at Chiriya Tapu before the rest of the island wakes up.

Bon VoyagersΒ manages the complete ground programme from Port Blair Airport arrival. Day 1 covers the Cellular Jail and the evening birding walk at Mount Harriet National Park near Port Blair. Day 2 is the south Andaman birding day β€” Chiriya Tapu mangrove edge in the morning and Wandoor marine national park shoreline in the afternoon. Day 3 drives north to Mayabunder for the afternoon forest birding and Karmatang Beach shorebird walk. Day 4 moves to Diglipur with an afternoon entry into Saddle Peak National Park. Day 5 opens before dawn at Saddle Peak for the best birding window, then drives south to Rangat for the overnight. Day 6 returns to Port Blair for the departure. Private AC Ertiga or Xylo class vehicle covers all road transfers throughout. Forest department permits for Mount Harriet and Saddle Peak are included. Daily breakfast and dinner on MAP basis throughout all six days.

6 Days

The andaman birding package begins at Port Blair Airport where the Bon Voyagers representative meets the group on arrival. The afternoon covers the Cellular Jail β€” the colonial prison built between 1896 and 1906 across seven radiating wings where political prisoners from across India were held. The evening light and sound show runs approximately 45 minutes in the jail courtyard after dark.

The Day 1 birding begins at Mount Harriet National Park β€” the highest point on South Andaman at approximately 365 metres, accessible by ferry to Bamboo Flat and a short drive to the park entry, or by direct road route from Port Blair. The forest at Mount Harriet in the late afternoon carries the Andaman treepie, the Andaman bulbul and the Andaman coucal in habitat that gives a first read of what the archipelago’s endemic forest species look and sound like before the more demanding north forest days ahead. Overnight in Port Blair.

The pre-dawn drive to Chiriya Tapu on Day 2 of this andaman birding package β€” approximately 30 kilometres south of Port Blair β€” arrives at the forest edge before first light when the mangrove bird activity is at its peak. The Andaman teal favours freshwater pockets near the mangrove system at Chiriya Tapu and the forest edge holds several endemic and resident species active in this hour before the day heats. The mangrove belt from the water edge inward is the productive zone β€” the canopy at Chiriya Tapu closes over in the denser sections and the light filtering through it in the early morning has a quality specific to this latitude and this forest type.

The drive to Wandoor covers approximately 29 kilometres from Port Blair on the south coast of South Andaman β€” the Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park shoreline and the coastal forest here carry shore birds, sea birds and mangrove edge species different from the Chiriya Tapu assemblage. Overnight in Port Blair.

The drive north to Mayabunder covers approximately 240 kilometres through the Andaman Trunk Road convoy zone near Jirkatang β€” the escorted passage through the Jarawa Tribal Reserve where stopping and photography are strictly prohibited β€” and arrives in Mayabunder in the early afternoon. The North Andaman forest around Mayabunder holds the Andaman drongo, the Andaman coucal and the Andaman hawk-owl in the forest corridors between the town and the coast.

The afternoon forest walk in the Mayabunder area on this andaman birding package is the first serious North Andaman forest encounter of the circuit β€” the bird assemblage here differs from the south in ways that reflect the slight difference in forest character and canopy structure between Middle and North Andaman. Karmatang Beach in the evening carries shorebird species along the tide line β€” waders, terns and other coastal species active in the low light before dark. Overnight at Mayabunder.

The pre-dawn start at Mayabunder on Day 4 opens the second early morning birding window of this andaman birding package β€” the forest at this hour before the heat builds carries species that go quiet by mid-morning. The drive from Mayabunder to Diglipur covers approximately 80 kilometres in around 2 to 2.5 hours, arriving in Diglipur before noon with the afternoon available for Saddle Peak National Park.

The forest department check post at the park entry is the afternoon stop β€” the group enters the park on the lower trail sections where the Andaman woodpecker and the Andaman serpent eagle have been recorded, the forest closing over the trail within the first few hundred metres of the park boundary. The full pre-dawn summit approach is reserved for Day 5. The Saddle Peak forest in the late afternoon gives a read of the elevation gradient and the canopy character before the serious birding morning. Overnight at Diglipur.

The pre-dawn start at Saddle Peak is the centrepiece of this andaman birding package β€” the group enters the forest trail before first light when the endemic species are most vocal and the forest is active before the temperature rises and the canopy goes quiet. The Andaman woodpecker is most frequently recorded in the lower and mid-elevation forest sections in the early morning hours. The Andaman serpent eagle carries at elevation. The Andaman shama β€” one of the most sought-after endemics by visiting birders β€” favours the dense understorey on the mid-elevation trail. No specific sightings can be guaranteed β€” the forest is wild and the birds move on their own schedule.

The birding window runs until mid-morning when the forest activity drops and the drive south begins. The return drive from Diglipur to Rangat covers approximately 150 kilometres in around 4 to 5 hours, arriving Rangat by late afternoon. Overnight at Rangat.

The drive from Rangat to Port Blair on the final morning of this andaman birding package covers approximately 170 kilometres in around 5 to 6 hours including the southbound convoy passage through the Jarawa Tribal Reserve. Groups with afternoon or evening departure flights can depart Rangat after an early breakfast and arrive in Port Blair with time before the flight. Groups with morning departures should flag the timing with the Bon team at booking so the Day 5 programme is structured with the return drive to Port Blair directly rather than the Rangat overnight.

The Bon Voyagers vehicle drops at Port Blair Airport. The six days have covered five distinct birding habitats β€” South Andaman forest at Mount Harriet, mangrove edge at Chiriya Tapu, coastal forest at Wandoor, North Andaman forest at Mayabunder and the Saddle Peak elevation gradient.

Best Time to Visit

The Andaman forest bird activity is highest in the cooler months between October and April when the forest is at its most acoustically active in the pre-dawn and early morning hours. The endemic species of Saddle Peak National Park are most vocal in the breeding season window of February through April when territorial calls carry furthest through the rainforest canopy. The monsoon from June through September brings heavy forest rain that suppresses bird activity and makes the early morning trail approaches at Chiriya Tapu and Saddle Peak difficult and sometimes impassable. The North Andaman convoy roads are most reliable between October and May. The peak demand window for this andaman birding package falls in December through March when all five birding habitats in the circuit are at their most productive.
