Overview

Some trips are about getting somewhere. A road trip through Arunachal Pradesh is about being somewhere, specifically in a car on mountain roads that take you from flat Assam tea gardens to a 13,700-foot pass and a monastery on the China border in four days of driving. This arunachal road trip package runs 10 Days, 9 Nights from Guwahati, covering a full circuit through the eastern Himalayas with a Kaziranga wildlife day on the return leg.

The private car is the whole point of this. Every driver on this circuit has run these roads in every condition and knows when to hold speed and when to stop, because the light on the Sela lake at nine in the morning is different from the light at eleven and a road trip is what happens when you have enough days to wait for the right moment rather than just mark it on a list.

10 Days

The arunachal road trip package starts at Guwahati airport where our representative meets the group, loads the bags and points the car east along the Brahmaputra plains to Tezpur, about 180 kilometres and four to five hours through flat Assam tea country.
The Himalayan foothills appear on the northern horizon before Tezpur arrives, which is a useful preview because the car will be in those hills for most of the next seven days. First night in Tezpur, flat and warm, the kind of opening that earns its sleep.

North from Tezpur into the hills. The Inner Line Permit check at Bhalukpong is where Assam ends and Arunachal Pradesh begins, and the road changes character almost immediately, the tarmac narrowing and the forest closing in on both sides. Bomdila appears at 8,000 feet about three hours in, worth a stop at the monastery and the viewpoint before the gentle drop to Dirang in the early afternoon at 4,900 feet.
The car has climbed more than 7,000 feet today and the body has barely noticed, which is exactly what a gradual mountain road is for.

Sela Pass is at 13,700 feet and every road trip through Arunachal Pradesh converges here eventually. The drive from Dirang takes about seven hours with the frozen lake arriving below the top as a sudden colour against the grey rock and snow.
The arunachal road trip package stops here for as long as the group wants, because it is a private car and the driver knows the road in every season. The Jaswant Garh Memorial and Nuranang Falls break the descent before Tawang at 10,000 feet, the monastery visible on its ridge from the approach road.

The car stays parked today. Tawang Monastery in the morning, the largest in India and a working Monpa Buddhist monastery founded in the seventeenth century, then the Tawang War Memorial and Urgelling Monastery in the afternoon.
The town lanes and viewpoints over the valley fill whatever remains of the day. After three days of continuous driving the body is glad for a day without kilometres, and the monastery at this altitude in this light earns being sat with rather than passed through.

Another parked day, which the arunachal road trip package builds in because two nights at 10,000 feet is better than one for the acclimatization. The Gyangong Ani Gompa nunnery, the Grand Buddha statue and the town corners that Day 4 missed.
The optional Bumla Pass excursion is available at INR 5,500 per person on the spot for those who want the India-China border ridge in a separate registered vehicle with a special permit. It is rough road to 15,000 feet, which is exactly the kind of driving the word extreme was invented to describe.

Back on the road and the route is the same but it is not the same road. Returning over Sela Pass gives the lake a different angle and the afternoon light falls on the eastern ridge face rather than the western one the ascent showed. About 180 kilometres and eight hours to Bomdila, the car dropping through the Tenga valley toward the lower country.
The arunachal road trip package uses the Bomdila overnight to close the high mountain section quietly, the monastery in the evening calm at this hour.

Out of the hills and into the forest transition, the road dropping from Bomdila through Bhalukpong to the lower country where the river reappears and the trees change character at lower elevation. The Nameri forest edge near Bhalukpong is the overnight, on the Assam bank of the Jia Bhoroli river where the forest begins and the mountain road ends.
After six days of passes and high country, a night at river level with the water nearby is a different kind of reset before the final road days.

East and then south along the Brahmaputra plain, about three to four hours from the Nameri forest edge to Kaziranga National Park, the road flat and fast after a week of mountain switchbacks. The afternoon jeep safari into the central range puts the one-horned rhinoceros at close range in floodplain grassland that is as different from Sela Pass as this country gets.
Overnight at a park-edge lodge, the arunachal road trip package using this Kaziranga chapter as the one the end of the trip deserves.

An optional dawn safari before breakfast, the Brahmaputra floodplain in first light being its own kind of landscape after a week in the mountains. Then three to four hours to Guwahati along the highway, the plains drive giving the eyes and the body time to decompress from ten days of altitude and switchbacks.
Guwahati overnight near the airport, the trip effectively complete.

Airport in the morning, our representative at the drop and the arunachal road trip package closes.
The odometer on the car has earned its rest. So has everyone in it.

Best Time to Visit

Arunachal Pradesh is most accessible from March to early November, when Sela Pass and the Tawang roads are generally clear of heavy snow. During peak months, daytime temperatures in Tawang range between 10 and 20 degrees Celsius, though nights stay cold year round. September offers a perfect balance of manageable weather and stunning visibility before winter conditions begin in November.
