Overview

Most Chennai travellers who book a northeast trip expect Tawang and Sela Pass. This one goes somewhere different. This chennai to arunachal tour routes 8 Days, 7 Nights through Itanagar, the state capital that almost nobody visits on a standard package, and Ziro Valley, the Apatani plateau where the paddy fields and pine ridges look nothing like anything south India has to offer.

The elevation stays moderate throughout, which suits families and first-time northeast travellers, and the return leg adds a half-day at Kaziranga in Assam for the one-horned rhinoceros before the flight home. The private car,Β Inner Line Permit, MAP meals and hotel rooms are handled before landing at Guwahati, and the route covers a part ofΒ Arunachal PradeshΒ that most operators simply have not packaged yet.

8 Days

The flight from Chennai takes about three to five hours with a connection, usually via Kolkata or Hyderabad, and the chennai to arunachal tour gets underway from Guwahati airport when our representative meets the group at arrivals. The drive to Itanagar takes about three hours on NH-15 through the Assam foothills before the road crosses into Arunachal Pradesh at Banderdewa and climbs gently into the capital.
Itanagar sits at around 300 metres, warm and green, and the first evening is an easy introduction to a state most Chennai travellers have not visited before.

A full day in Itanagar, which the itinerary takes seriously rather than treating as a pass-through. Ita Fort in the morning, a 14th to 15th century structure built entirely of bricks in a landscape of forested hills, the name Itanagar literally meaning the fort of bricks. Ganga Lake in the afternoon, also called Gekar Sinyi, a quiet natural lake in the middle of the capital where most visitors stay twice as long as they intended.
The Jawaharlal Nehru State Museum rounds out the day with the tribal heritage of 26 communities under one roof.

After breakfast the chennai to arunachal tour continues with the drive to Ziro, about 160 kilometres and four to five hours through Lower Subansiri district, the road gaining elevation steadily as it moves into the interior.
Ziro valley opens at around 1,500 metres as a wide pine-rimmed plateau where the Apatani people have practised the same rice and fish cultivation for generations, the fields and the fish ponds arranged in a system that has been listed by UNESCO as a potential World Heritage site. The afternoon goes to Hong village, one of the largest Apatani settlements in the state.

The day covers what a single afternoon cannot. Hija and Hari villages in the morning, the Tarin fish farm where the rice-fish cultivation is visible in working form, and the Ziro Putu viewpoint above the valley in the afternoon where the patchwork of paddy below and the pine ridges above come into one frame.
The chennai to arunachal tour keeps the pace at the valley's own rhythm rather than routing from sight to sight, because that is the only honest way to spend a day in a place that is genuinely unhurried and deserves to feel that way.

The return from Ziro goes north through North Lakhimpur and then west toward Tezpur in Assam, covering roughly 200 kilometres and around five to six hours. The road descends gradually from the Arunachal hills and the landscape shifts from pine forest and paddy terraces to the flat warm river country of the Brahmaputra valley.
Tezpur by evening, a comfortable overnight, and the trip moves into its final days, which are built around an easy transition toward Guwahati and the Kaziranga stop that waits tomorrow.

A short drive from Tezpur, about ninety minutes, takes the group into Kaziranga National Park on the Brahmaputra's south bank, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the most reliable place in India to see the one-horned rhinoceros. The afternoon jeep safari covers the central range, where the rhino density is the highest in any protected area for this species and where elephants, wild buffalo and the occasional tiger round out whatever the afternoon decides to show.
Overnight at a park-edge lodge, the Arunachal plateau already beginning to feel like another world from the night before.

The optional morning safari before breakfast is worth taking because the light on the Brahmaputra floodplain at dawn is different from anything the afternoon offers. By mid-morning the group is back on the highway toward Guwahati, about three to four hours, the chennai to arunachal tour arriving at the city in time for a comfortable afternoon and a proper final meal before the flight the next day.

Guwahati to Chennai is about three to five hours with the connection, and the chennai to arunachal tour closes at the departure gate.
The rhino from yesterday and the Apatani paddy from earlier in the week occupy slightly different parts of the mind on the flight home, which is about the right way to finish a trip through a state most Indians have not yet seen and most should.

Best Time to Visit

Ziro Valley is pleasant from March to October, when the plateau is green and the roads are generally stable. The wet rice fields are at their best from June onward, while cooler months give clear open views. Late September brings the Ziro music festival, when accommodation fills quickly and early booking is essential. Monsoon months are lush but road conditions can vary.
